My Carolina Today gets ready for the Oscars with great movies, great recipes and Outta The Park BBQ Sauce. In his weekly Edible Whole Foods segment, noted author and publisher Fred Thompson connects this year’s Academy Awards with simple and delicious foods inspired by scenes and settings from this year’s Best Picture Nominees.
In homage to the Hawaiian setting of "The Descendants," Fred uses Outta The Park BBQ Sauce to make a delicious glaze for beef satays and bacon-wrapped shrimp and pineapple skewers. The flavor was tropical and sweet, and Fred added a delightful crunchy contrast with a light coating of crushed soy nuts just before serving.
As publisher of the James Beard award-winning Edible Piedmont Magazine, Fred Thompson is well-known across NC for his food knowledge, grilling expertise and outspoken support of local growers and food entrepreneurs. As a small-batch producer in a crowded category, we appreciate Fred’s comments on how our sauce stands apart with its versatility. Fred said, “I like the sauce because it has a ginger note; it’s not like the typical BBQ sauce… I use it across the board with a lot of different items, fish, shrimp, beef, pork. It’s not just a rib-slathering sauce like so many sauces that are in the market today, and that aisle is competitive… I think yours stands out.”
Our thanks to Fred and Whole Foods Market, sponsor of the Edible Whole Foods segment, for featuring Outta The Park this week. We hope your favorite movie wins tonight, and we hope your Oscar party is one to remember with great friends, family and fine foods inspired by the occasion.
