Outta The Park BBQ Grilled Tofu Recipe

We have heard from many of our vegetarian and vegan customers that Outta The Park BBQ Sauce goes great with tofu. We have experimented a couple of times with mixed results based on our own inexperience cooking with tofu. We were delighted recently when a customer and fan of our sauce, Lauren D. from Charlotte, sent us her recipe for Grilled Tofu. We made it last night for the first time, and we have to say Lauren's recipe is truly outta the park! As Scott put it, when you combine a pan-fry and grilling approach, it has got to be good! And it is! In addition, we think Lauren's egg & flour panfry technique before grilling is the secret to grill BBQ tofu perfectly.

Here's her recipe - thank you Lauren from Beth & Scott at Outta The Park! We are certain that our vegetarian and vegan customers will thank you too! As a reminder or in case you didn't already know this, Outta The Park Original BBQ Sauce is a vegetarian bbq sauce, and our Hot & Spicy is vegan.

Ingredients

1 (16 ounce) package extra firm tofu*
3 tablespoons olive oil
1 egg white
1 tablespoon Outta-the-Park BBQ sauce
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1 cup Outta-the-Park BBQ sauce

Directions

Drain tofu, and slice into strips. Place in a plastic bag or container, and freeze overnight. This will give the tofu a meatier texture. Thaw tofu strips, and blot with paper towels to dry.

(*Note: step one can be omitted if you have extra firm tofu or a tofu 'cutlet.')

Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.

In a small bowl, whisk together the egg white and 1 tablespoon of barbecue sauce.

Combine the flour, salt, and pepper in a separate bowl.

Dip the tofu slices into the egg mixture, then into the flour mixture, shaking off excess flour.

Fry in the hot oil for about 1 minute on each side, until golden brown. Just fry enough at one time so they are not crowded. Remove from the oil to paper towels to drain and cool.

Preheat the oven's broiler or prepare grill. Brush tofu slices with additional BBQ sauce, and allow to marinate while the broiler or grill heats up.

Arrange tofu on a broiler pan (or wire rack set over a cookie sheet) or directly on the grill for best results. Position the oven rack about 6 inches from the heat source.

Broil or grill for 5 minutes on each side, or until browned and crisp, watching closely so as not to burn them. Serve warm with the remaining barbeque sauce for dipping.
