Best Summer Squash for the Grill is...Patty Pan!

Our family is fortunate to have a great farmers market nearby. We love trying out unique varieties of vegetables that aren't available in grocery stores. A recent major discovery came when a favorite farmer sent us home with some short, scalloped edge Patty Pan squash to try out. The 20 second video below will show you what these look like freshly cut from the vine.

Believe me you will want to find these this summer and then plant them every summer going forward because this variety of squash is PERFECT for the grill!

How so, you might ask. Well for one, check out how they look in our grill shot. Peter Pan squash is dense and meaty and when you slice it for grilling it even looks like burger patties!!

The prep is simple too. Just cut the top off like you would a regular squash, then cut each squash into 1/2 inch slices. Coat lightly with olive oil and then season with salt, pepper and your favorite spices. Put them on the grill, and cook like a hamburger. Flip squash occasionally and then brush on Outta The Park BBQ Sauce near the end of your cook time. These shown in the picture cooked on the grill for around 35 minutes. They were even smoked alongside a rack of ribs.

Look out zucchini and yellow crookneck squash, Patty Pan just may relegate you to casserole duty!

Try Patty Pan squash on the grill this summer - we think you'll be very glad you did!
